Is Your Company Spending Too Much on Electricity? 4 Ways to Minimize Costs

[This article was written by Meghan Belnap.]

Smarter usage of your electricity leads to resulting lower electricity prices. Saving money and conserving electricity is a great combination and a “win-win” situation. Here are some simple and effective tips for you to minimize your electric costs.

Turn Off Electronics

You probably don’t realize that your computer, television, DVR, stereo, and other equipment are big energy drainers when not in use because that little light that remains lit indicates that they are still consuming power. Make it easy to turn several items off with one button by using a shared power strip. If you have a smart TV or Roku or such that needs to be left on for software updates, you can enable a power-saving mode by going into settings and changing the sleep mode default to the shortest time.

Get Ceiling Fans

Ceiling fans get more from your air conditioner, electric furnace, and blower. Take advantage of the fans’ ability to boost the reach of your cooling or heating unit and to circulate the cold or heat. A switch on the motor allows a fan to spin either clockwise or counterclockwise. To circulate cold air, run the fan on high in a counterclockwise direction on high. When you need heat, run the fan clockwise on low so that warm air is pulled away from the ceiling. Remember to turn the fans off when leaving the room to save on electricity.

Switch to LEDs

Most places have lots of light bulbs, so the fact that the LED (light-emitting diode) bulb is much more efficient than the CFL (compact fluorescent light) one can be quite a money saver. The average 60-watt equivalent LED uses only nine watts of electricity while the average CFL uses 13 watts. That is a 30% reduction in the usage of electricity for each LED bulb. LED light bulbs have dropped in price since they were first introduced even though they have the advantage of outlasting CFLs and making their additional price worth their while.

Have Your Local Utility Do an Energy Audit

An energy audit is an outstanding way to have a professional look over your premises and find more ways that you can save money on electricity. Even when you think that you are doing as much as possible for efficiency, there are always improvements that the utility’s specialized equipment can determine such as if there is insufficient insulation or air leakages or other problems that are hard to detect by personal inspection. Many commercial electrical services offer this and can use the information to make your electrical system more efficient.

If you train your employees to help you to employ numerous new but easy habits, some of which have been suggested above, you will be amazed at how much they will enable a surprising drop in your electricity bill.
